Igaxes is a non-profit organization that defends the right of all children and young people to an independent, free and safe life, supporting their families and promoting educational equity and equal opportunities. We operate in the Spanish region of Galicia, providing support to children and young people at risk from an approach based on participation and empowement. Through a strong advocacy orientation, the organization seeks to influence policymaking, fight discrimination and expand social awareness to achieve change that leaves no child behind.
In order to break the cycle of social exclusion transmitted from one generation to the next, we provide each child with a ring of support that involves five areas of action -family, health, education, employment and community integration, guaranteeing their right to have a say in the construction of their own future and a fairer world.
Over more than two decades, Igaxes has developed more than 40 projects on a local, regional and international scale. We currently develop around 20 projects for the protection and personal development of looked after children, care leavers, unaccompanied migrant children, children and youth affected by poverty, social exclusion and/or special emotional needs.
We are an organization specialized in the transition to independent living for children and young people without family support. Both in urban and rural areas, our programmes provide them with housing, vocational and professional training, employment opportunities, mental healthcare and community integration initiatives.
Within our Education Area, we aim to prevent premature school leaving of children affected by Adverse Childhood Experiencies. Working in alliance with teachers and school professionals, we provide social and educational support and therapeutic care, both for students and their families.
Igaxes has a current staff of 90 workers and 30 volunteers spread throughout the territory of Galicia. From 9 intervention centers, 8 homes for looked after children and more than 20 public schools, we give support to >2000 children and young people every year.
